My students will learn about how nineteen-year-old Eddie is just trying to get by and they will hopefully connect with the idea that they will need to do more than just "get by" in order to be successful. Eddie wants to forget his violent past, hold down a job, and walk a straight line (which is great), but after his cousin's murder, he finds himself slowly drawn back violence. Many of my students, like Eddie, face insurmountable odds. This novel will give them an opportunity to examine the intersectionality between their own background and the experiences that often plague their lives. Set against the backdrop of a city sweltering in the grip of poverty, crime, and unfulfilled dreams, Buried Onions tells story of a young man struggling to survive in a world spiraling out of control. This novel will compel students to be introspective, while securing their sense of self in a world where they are often behind the eight ball. I look forward to giving my students an opportunity to go on this journey.
