One student even said, \"This is really helpful!\" It was such a great moment because they immediately connected hands on learning with real-world concepts.\r\n\r\nWe kicked off a project called \"Build an Atom Challenge\" where students work in teams to construct models of different elements and explain their properties. The magnetic pieces make it easy for them to visualize atomic structure, which is something that's hard to grasp from a textbook alone. The excitement was contagious, students were asking questions like, \"What happens if we add more neutrons?\" and \"Can we make an atom have different number of protons and neutrons?\"\r\n\r\nThe snacks and fidget toys have been a huge hit too! Through the dual narratives of Salva and Nya, they learned about the challenges faced in Sudan and the importance of access to clean water. My kids developed critical thinking skills by analyzing character motivations, making connections to real-world issues, and reflecting on how adversity can shape personal growth. We had a debate-style discussions around resilience and the impact of humanitarian efforts, helping students build both comprehension and compassion.\r\n\r\nIn my classroom, high-quality reading is marked by active engagement, thoughtful questioning, and meaningful discussion. Students are encouraged to annotate their text, participate in meaningful discussion, and use textual evidence to support their ideas. Our rich reading environment includes opportunities to connect literature to their own lives and the world around them. I foster this by modeling close reading strategies, facilitating inquiry-based conversations, and integrating cross-curricular connections that deepen understanding and relevance.\r\n\r\nThree of my students (we'll call them Jamal, Ava, and Luis) each found unique inspiration in 'A Long Walk to Water.' Jamal was moved by Salva's journey and began researching ways to support clean water initiatives in his community. Ava connected with Nya's story and wrote a personal reflection on the importance of education for girls around the world. Luis, who previously struggled with reading, found the book's alternating perspectives engaging and began participating more actively in class discussions. Their experiences highlight how literature can ignite curiosity, empathy, and a love for learning in diverse ways.","fullyFundedDate":1758824904499,"projectUrl":"project/a-long-read-to-water-100-books-100-m/9477939/","projectTitle":"A Long 'Read' to Water: 100 Books, 100 Minds","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Brooks","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1552275_orig.jpg?crop=1324,1324,x0,y167&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1752853554139","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1552275"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_1636","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1056,"numTeachers":65,"percentFrplEligible":89,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":33,"percentWhite":11,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":45,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"16.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":59.2,"schoolId":1636,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about McClintock Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"McClintock Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/charlotte-mecklenburg-school-district/mcclintock-middle-school/1636"}
