The purpose of our school is to educate and empower our students through cultural revitalization. We exist to engage urban Indigenous students by integrating and reclaiming Native American identities, cultures, and languages through authentic academic experiences.
Our fifth grade team consists of about 40 amazing students.
They are passionate, driven, and creative. They care deeply for their community as we learn about current events that affect our community and what we can do to make change.
My students are some of the kindest PEOPLE that I know. I have been amazed with the compassion and care that they show one another. And if you're looking for a good old wholesome game of kickball, these are the kids to play with.
My Project
Often times representation of our Native students is left out of textbooks and learning materials. When they are included, examples either misrepresent Native people or they are depicted only in the past.
It is proven that strong and positive representation is super important to positive identity building.
Our students have the right to be able to learn about who they are in a perspective that showcases Indigenous brilliance.
The books on this list are all written by Indigenous authors. They tell contemporary and historical stories through an Indigenous lens. We often substitute texts to teach grade level standards. We are asking for two copies of each book, so that both 5th grade classrooms can utilize these texts for educational learning opportunities.
