Often times representation of our Native students is left out of textbooks and learning materials. When they are included, examples either misrepresent Native people or they are depicted only in the past. It is proven that strong and positive representation is super important to positive identity building. Our students have the right to be able to learn about who they are in a perspective that showcases Indigenous brilliance. The books on this list are all written by Indigenous authors. They tell contemporary and historical stories through an Indigenous lens. We often substitute texts to teach grade level standards. We are asking for two copies of each book, so that both 5th grade classrooms can utilize these texts for educational learning opportunities.
