Books Teens Actually Want to Read

Help me give my students young adult books that capture their interest and increase their reading stamina!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach 10th grade English and 12th grade AVID in Long Beach, California, and I have the privilege of working with an incredible group of students who bring curiosity, resilience, and unique perspectives into the classroom every day.

One of the most powerful ways to build strong readers is by giving students access to books they actually want to read.

Young adult novels often explore themes that resonate deeply with teenagers, such as identity, friendship, family, resilience, and finding one’s place in the world. students are working hard to build confidence in their reading skills, while others simply haven’t yet discovered a book that truly captures their interest.

When students see their interests reflected in the books available to them, they are far more likely to pick up a book, stay engaged, and develop stronger reading habits.

These high-interest young adult books will help students:

- Develop stronger reading stamina and comprehension

- Discover authors and stories that reflect diverse experiences

- Participate more actively in classroom discussions

- Build confidence as independent readers

Many of my students are still discovering their identities as readers, and having a classroom library filled with popular and engaging titles can make all the difference. When students find a book they truly enjoy, reading stops feeling like an assignment and starts becoming something they look forward to.

My goal is to help every student find books that feel meaningful, exciting, and accessible to them.
