This is my fourth year teaching second grade, and I absolutely love this age because of their eagerness to learn and their love for their teacher. My students this year are great listeners and love to interact with one another. I have been impressed with many of my students already displaying a love for reading. I want my students to love reading and to not think of it as a chore. Some of my students' reading fluency has already increased in the two weeks we have been in school.
Reading is an important part of education and student learning. In second grade, students are building their fluency and comprehension. The goal is for students to move from learning to read to reading to learn.
Oklahoma has adopted new state standards that put an emphasis on students reading books that are above their grade level and skill in hopes of their reading comprehension and fluency improving.
I need more books at a higher level to meet this standard and also to challenge my students. My goal is for each student to have the same book so they can all follow along and track the words as they are being read.
