My third graders love gathering together for story time, and the new books have given us opportunities to laugh, make predictions, ask questions, and have meaningful conversations. Reading in our classroom is an interactive experience—we stop to discuss characters, make connections, learn new vocabulary, and think about what the author is trying to teach us. Even students who may be hesitant to read independently are eager to listen, participate, and share their ideas during our read-alouds.\r\n\r\nThe books have also become valuable teaching tools across our curriculum. The True Story of the Three Little Pigs will help us explore point of view, while Enemy Pie will encourage students to identify theme and think about how characters change. For our biography unit, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, Emmanuel's Dream, and The Girl Who Thought in Pictures will introduce students to inspiring people who demonstrated perseverance, creativity, and determination. The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors has made our folktale and mythology lessons especially fun and memorable. Most importantly, these books are helping my students see reading as something they can enjoy while also strengthening the skills they need to become confident, thoughtful readers. These books have given my students more opportunities to find stories that interest them while practicing the reading skills we work on every day. Because my students are developing readers with a wide range of ability levels, having books they can successfully read and enjoy is so important. We use these texts to practice skills such as sight word recognition, decoding unfamiliar words, reading fluently, building vocabulary, and answering comprehension questions.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is all about building confidence and helping students see themselves as readers. Students have opportunities to choose books that interest them, read independently, read with support, and practice skills using texts at an appropriate level. One of the biggest benefits of adding these books has been simply having more choices available. When students are excited about what they are reading, they are much more willing to pick up a book, practice, and keep trying when reading becomes difficult.\r\n\r\nIt has been so exciting to watch students explore the new books and find ones they genuinely want to read. For students who have struggled with reading in the past, finding a book they can read successfully can be a huge confidence boost. With these new materials, my students have been able to explore hands on building challenges centered around the number 100. One of our favorite projects was creating structures using exactly 100 items whether it was cups, sticks, or blocks. This activity encouraged problem solving, teamwork, and critical thinking as students planned, built, and adjusted their designs. It also reinforced math skills like counting, grouping, and understanding quantity in a fun, memorable way.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their excitement was immediate and contagious. They couldn't wait to dive in, and the room quickly filled with creativity and collaboration. Some students carefully counted and sorted their pieces, while others eagerly began constructing towers, bridges, and unique designs. It was incredible to see their confidence grow as they experimented and shared ideas with classmates. Even students who are typically hesitant to participate were fully engaged and proud of what they created.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, we are continuing to build on these skills by incorporating more STEM based challenges into our lessons. Students are now working on designing more complex structures and reflecting on what makes them strong and stable. We are also connecting these activities to writing by having students describe their creations and explain their building process. While many donors may think of technology as entertainment, these iPads are used as instructional tools that adapt to each student's needs. During RTI time, students practice reading and math skills at their own pace while receiving immediate feedback. This has made learning more accessible and less frustrating, especially for those who need extra support.\r\n\r\nStudents are most excited about the independence and interactivity the iPads provide. They enjoy using apps that feel like games while still helping them learn, and they love being able to track their progress.
