Do you remember the first book you fell in love with? I do, and it changed me. It changed my perspective about myself and the world around me. I want the same for my students. For reluctant readers finding your first treasured book is a defining and pivotal moment. A whole new world opens up that you never believed was possible!
My San Francisco sixth graders are about to embark on their first year of middle school as YA readers.
They come from elementary schools all over the city with a variety of experiences and perspectives, but what they share is their struggle in reading: comprehension, fluency, and knowing themselves as readers. This project could change all that!
Creating a classroom library that reflects their interests, passions and identities is paramount with a range of high quality, diverse books that are at their "just right" reading level. As a long time language arts teacher I know the buzz that will occur when browsing and checking out brand new titles from our classroom library.
My Project
Books like Stick Cat, Mighty Jack and Night of the Living Shadows will further support my students' reading development because they will provide the accessibility and push that they need. Additionally, these books will keep my students engaged with humor and images that will further promote their comprehension of the story.
These books will also help to bolster my classroom library collection, that is being built from the ground up.
Having multiple texts from a variety of genres will create a rich classroom library that provides students' choice and an opportunity to learn about the varying genres, therefore expanding students' reading interests.
