My Project

My students love to read! Book clubs encourage critical thinking and deeper engagement with stories. Every month, our third-grade students plan to study a different genre of literature and bring the joys of reading to their younger reading buddies. When students meet, they talk, ask questions, and interact with each other on a level that differs from guided reading groups.

Students learn when they feel special.

After reading an excerpt from J.D. and the Great Barber BattleThe Great Barber Battle by J. Dillard, there was an immediate connection. The students related to the problem with J.D.'s haircut and learned the author lives in Atlanta, Georgia. Our school is twenty-two miles outside of Atlanta. My students decided The Great Barber Battle would become our first book club selection.

Book clubs provide numerous advantages. Meeting to discuss books encourages teamwork, fosters a student's ability to listen and react, creates a sense of community around books, and so much more. Book clubs create more readers and provide an opportunity to come together to build new knowledge and understanding.
