My Students

I teach reading intervention and modified English to 10th-grade Special education students. Most of my students read a few levels below the standard reading level. This, plus their struggles with focus and long-term retention due to their disabilities, makes it very difficult for them to engage and process through classical texts that go with our curriculum.

My Project

Our students typically avoid reading and struggle with independent reading due to their lower reading levels. I really feel that getting high-interest books into their hands will have a long-term impact on their reading abilities, motivation, and interests. I want to build life-long readers who know that even if you struggle with a text, you can still find something interesting to get out of it.

Our students struggle to follow along in older, classical selections typically chosen for the English department.

I teach curriculum-modified classes as well as reading intervention. We have the ability to adapt our activities and instruction to help students navigate these novels. I want students to see that reading is not always a stuffy, old, hard-to-read book. I want to be able to offer them choices they can relate to and engage with during classroom instruction.
