Our students typically avoid reading and struggle with independent reading due to their lower reading levels. I really feel that getting high-interest books into their hands will have a long-term impact on their reading abilities, motivation, and interests. I want to build life-long readers who know that even if you struggle with a text, you can still find something interesting to get out of it. Our students struggle to follow along in older, classical selections typically chosen for the English department. I teach curriculum-modified classes as well as reading intervention. We have the ability to adapt our activities and instruction to help students navigate these novels. I want students to see that reading is not always a stuffy, old, hard-to-read book. I want to be able to offer them choices they can relate to and engage with during classroom instruction.
