My Students

The novel sets in our English workroom desperately need to be replaced. The Poisonwood Bible would be a great book to add to the collection. It will challenge students to think deeply and develop their discussion and writing skills. It is a fascinating story that will demand their attention.

The students in my ninth grade English class tend to be reluctant readers.

However, with the right book, I know they will burn with enthusiasm for good literature. They attend a rural school in Tennessee with a high rate of poverty. Many of their parents are high school dropouts and do not provide reading materials or encourage reading in the home. The more good books I can put in the hands of these kids, the better off they will be.

My Project

My students will use our new classroom computers to develop presentations comparing the southern United States with that of the Congo (two geographical places contrasted in the book). We will have meaningful discussions and writing exercises exploring the themes of the book. I plan to invite a guest speaker who is originally from the Congo to come speak to the class about his homeland and discuss the issues raised in the book with the students.

Sadly, teachers know that many students may not go on to read much else after high school.

It is critically important that students read as much quality literature in high school as possible in order to realize how meaningful books can be in their lives. With this book and your help, I hope many of my students will go on to be lifelong readers.
