Help me give my students an abundance of books that aid Black History instruction not just during the month of February but throughout the entire year.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students may come from meager means, humble homes, and fractured families, but they come eager and excited to learn. My Title I school houses students K-8 and provides each and every one with not only breakfast and lunch but a classroom that serves as a home.
They are not just my students, but my family, and each year I am lucky enough to begin a school year with new members.
While my family continues to grow, their needs continue to be met with proper support and dedication.
My Project
Our classroom library has always been a space of pride. Within our library are books that emphasize the importance of love, diversity, acceptance, and pride in oneself. The books that fill our shelves depict characters that look like the students in my class and represent their culture and background. I have made a huge effort to create said library as it has aided in the most amazing lessons, conversations, and joy.
With black names and historical events being showcased in the latest publications of children's books, my students' exposure to black history will continue to be an important part of daily instruction.
It is critical that my students are made aware of all that has been accomplished by black men and women. The inventions, discoveries, declarations and influence of black culture has lead itself to what we are able to enjoy today. Learning about the past aids to a better understanding and appreciation of what we have today. Through this list of texts, I hope to expose my students to some of the amazing black people who may not be as well known as others. I hope to grow this library more and more, and this is my latest list of what I would like to bring home to our classroom library.
