My Students

The students I work with are thoughtful, kind and generous. Because our community struggles with rural poverty and lack of access to resources that other schools and students might take for granted, our students become adept at "making do" in creative and surprising ways. They support each other and often play a role in supporting their families.

Our students come from small towns in rural, Central Maine.

While they are curious about the wider world, they are in many ways closed off from it. Social media offers a window, but it offers an increasingly biased view. Our school is a place where they are supported in exploring the world as much as possible before they graduate.

Although they live in the least diverse state in the nation, our students understand that they are part a larger national and international community. Through our curriculum, they are encouraged to explore literature that will expand their understanding of the complexities of our country and world and inspire them to explore and share the complexities they see and know in their own writing.

My Project

This year we have launched a version of American Literature that takes place entirely outside, in Maine, in essentially all weather. We believe it's important that students be able to "own" a book - to carry it with them, to write in it, to reference in their own writing.

Most of these books will be selected by students as the focus of their work.

They will carry the books with them into the field each day - whether down by our pond or on a snowshoeing excursion. A few will be classroom resources, such as the bird identification book. In all cases, these works will deepen students understanding of the natural world and serve as resources for their own writing.
