The students I work with are thoughtful, kind and generous. Because our community struggles with rural poverty and lack of access to resources that other schools and students might take for granted, our students become adept at "making do" in creative and surprising ways. They support each other, and often play a role in supporting their families. While they are curious about the wider world, they are in many ways closed off from it. Social media offers a window, but it offers an increasingly biased view. Our school is a place where they are supported in exploring the world as much as possible before they graduate. Although they live in the least diverse state in the nation, our students understand that they are part a larger national and international community.
