My students need high-interest books that will get them excited about reading. Students have free and independent reading everyday, and have been asking for graphic novels, manga, books about ghosts, Greek myths, robots, and zombies.

My Students

Our school is an urban middle school serving almost 600 students in grades 6-9. Our library is only 2.5 years old, after being closed for nearly a decade.

We have one of the most diverse populations in Oakland, including a specialized program to meet the needs of recently arrived immigrant and refugee students.

Our students in our special education program are some of the most devoted library regulars. The majority of our population receives free and reduced-price lunch.

Our students are so excited to have a school library, and check out over 3 books per student each month. We love that students feel the library is their space to explore, connect, imagine, and create.

My Project

Our students are clamoring for books, books, and more books! We need more high-interest books to engage our reluctant readers who are looking for something specific, be it a book about football or mutant kids with wings. Many of our avid readers are also requesting titles, and we want to make them feel that the library is truly their space to explore!

Fulfilling their requests helps us to build a community of readers who love to talk about books and enables us to get great books into the hands of all of our students.

These books will go a long way in shaping the reading identities of our students and creating a foundation for the love of learning.
