My Students

High interest books are the best way to get kids to want to read. In my classroom, I use a book chat method to get kids talking about literature. This is such a powerful way to increase comprehension. The challenge, put simply, is this: We have no book sets for the kids to read.

I teach in a high poverty school where our students' reading ability poses an ongoing challenge.

One thing the students really love is getting to read a book in a group with other students of a similar ability level. We call this activity "book chat". The kids really enjoy this book club atmosphere where it is safe to share their feelings and understandings regarding literature. In our classroom, we have such a limited supply of book sets and my students are always asking me if we can get more books.

My Project

I am requesting several different sets of books at different levels. Each set contains 7 books; 6 for the students and one teacher copy. The books cover several genres to appeal to multiple student interests and reading levels. This system will allow students to select a book that meets their interests and then read the book with students who share those same interests. In my experience, this is the best way to encourage students to read and to give them the experience of being so attached to a book that they cannot stop reading it.

Reading with comprehension is the single most important skill that students gain from attending school.

Yet every year I see more and more students who are reading well below grade level. When I ask these students about their relationship with books, their replies usually center around the fact that reading is boring. It is my purpose as a teacher to help these students read and to do that, they must see reading as worthwhile. Please help me provide this experience to my students.
