My Project

One of my greatest joys in life is being a teacher. My students and my school are so special to me. At my school, 97% of the students are Black/African-American. The majority of the students live in poverty, and 12% of students are proficient in reading. In college, one of the greatest things I learned was that books need to be mirrors, meaning that students should be able to see themselves represented in the books that they are reading.

It is not always easy for young black children to see themselves represented through the books they are reading.

I want my students to be able to go to our classroom library and pick out a book with characters that look like them. My wish for them is that they will be able to work on their reading skills while reading the books that they are represented in.
