Unique. Intelligent. Curious. Loving. My eight students on the Autism Spectrum embody them all. I am a District 75, Special Education teacher in Brooklyn, New York. My students come from middle to lower income households. They love coming to school knowing that they are celebrated for who they uniquely are.
When you walk into my classroom, you are greeted by eight students who complete a different part of our classroom puzzle.
You may not always get an immediate hello, but if you are patient and kind, my students will open up to you in their own ways. They may pull you out on the classroom dance floor during a movement break. They may ask what kind of car you drive in order to discover a mutual interest. They may ask you to read a new book with them or, if you're lucky, share their snack with you! My students continue to work hard each day to share their abilities with the world and learn how to overcome their disabilities.
My Project
This school year, I am hoping to build a classroom library for my students, filled with books that will spark excitement, joy and a passion for reading.
"The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you'll go,"- Dr Seuss.
I am a special education teacher in Brooklyn. I teach a self-contained class of eight students with Autism. My students have been working hard to become independent readers; more attentive to the words, pictures and meaning of a book. Therefore, I am hoping to surprise my students with a classroom library this year!
I am hoping to build a library that is curated to my students' interests and needs. My classroom library will contain books about animals, sports, automobiles and more! It will feature read alouds intended to teach students about kindness, social skills and embracing their abilities and disabilities.
Please consider contributing to my students' classroom library. Every student deserves to fall deep into a good book!
