It is imperative to provide my students with appropriate supports in order for them to successfully engage in school. As a first year teacher I am striving to bring what I learned from my textbooks into life in my own classroom. I want my students to constantly feel like their various needs are being supported in order for them to feel comfortable and safe in my classroom. Alternative seating, sensory tools, and fine motor tools have been found to profoundly increase a student's ability to engage and attend in the classroom. Many of my students contain low-muscle tone and/or in constant need for movement-based sensory input. Alternative seating including yoga ball chairs, bouncy bands, and bean bag chairs enable students to move, adjust their posture, and fulfill sensations. In response, alternative seating, also known as active seating, increases attentiveness, engagement, muscle-tone, and calmness which inevitably leads to greater improvements with learning. In addition, providing my students with various sensory tools will create my classroom into a multi-sensory environment, which has been found to improve academic, emotional, and social needs. Ranging from a simple tool, such as a stress ball, to a more complex tool, such as a sensory pat mat, sensory tools can profoundly alter a students ability to learn, socialize, and express emotions. Lastly, my students are cognitively and physically delayed. Therefore they are working on many basic academic and fine motor skills. Resources such as a peg boards, nuts and bolts sets, matching/sorting sets, and magnetic tiles will engage my students in activities that support these needs. The best moments in my classroom are moments of self-pride. The moments that my students recognize they are succeeding despite the daily challenges they face. This project will provide tools and resources that will bridge my students to success!
