My Project

This year I have also started teaching at Eliza Blaker School 55, a Butler Lab, Reggio-Inspired school which is the sister school to William Bell School 60. As I have settled into a second building, I am looking to build up some basic percussion instruments - especially those that go with my favorite picture book activities for students.

Engaging students in music through beautiful and diverse picture books is a passion of mine.

The books in this project will impact a variety of grade levels. Our youngest students (PreK, Kindergarten, & 1st Grade) will explore unpitched percussion with the book ‘Ohana Means Family (including the super fun vibraslap!) and explore barred instruments with Tumble and Jabari Jumps. 2nd & 3rd graders will learn hand drum techniques with Exclamation Mark! And perform movement and instruments with Amy Wu and the Ribbon Dance. In upper elementary, the 4th and 5th grade students perform ukulele with a variety of books including One Day in the Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus Tree, I Want My Hat Back, and The Epic Adventure of Huggie & Stick.

Many of the percussion instruments in this project, such as the hand drums, vibraslap, and rain sticks, will be used directly with the books in this project, while some of the other instruments, such as the castanets, cabasas, and agogo bells, will help give more options for students when we create and perform with unpitched percussion instruments throughout the year.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
