Book in a Bag

My students need 30 durable bags to help protect class books being taken home and at least 100 books at various reading levels to take home for extra reading practice.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know what it's like not to have books available to you in your own home? Can you imagine a school without a library where students can check out and bring home books? We can.

Our students come from low-income families, the majority of which are non-English speaking, with little or no means of providing their children with the materials necessary to improve their reading ability.

They attend a public school in a city district, hit hard by budget cuts, that doesn't even have a library or librarian. We have limited resources in our classrooms and no money in our budget to buy materials. These students are 3rd graders who can barely read at a 2nd grade level. They are eager to learn but have little support at home because many parents are illiterate or do not speak any English.

My Project

With these leveled books I will be able to institute a take home reading program. Every student will be given a durable take-home bag in which they can carry all materials for successful reading at home, such as reading response journals and appropriately leveled books. Students will be able to choose books at their own levels that will allow them to be successful readers, which will in turn build confidence. The leveled readers will allow students to grow throughout the year and meet the goals expected of a 3rd grader. These students will have access to a variety of books on a daily basis, which will increase interest in reading.

Throughout the year, I have watched my students struggle with reading.

Being able to take home new books that are accessible to them will not only expose the students to rich vocabulary and literature but will also excite them. They will WANT to take home a book and read.
