My Students

My students are overaged and under-credited students who are working extremely hard to earn their high school diplomas.

My students are taking as many courses as possible in an evening program to graduate high school as quickly as possible.

They need all the resources they can get.

My Project

Independent Reading has become a staple in ELA classes at our school. To ensure that every lesson has reading, writing and discussion I implemented book clubs which take about 30 minutes of our class time.

Students expressed concern that the books that they had to choose from were boring and too difficult to read.

I did extensive research to find books that are relevant, culturally responsive, and support my students' reading levels.

I have seen how having a choice as to what to read can positively affect my students' work and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
