Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a low income, high poverty industrialized area. Most students are English language learners, and their parents speak little English. They lack the opportunities and experiences many other kids have. However, they come with big smiles and even bigger dreams.
I want to broaden their horizons while leveling the playing field.
My students need to be exposed to different materials and experiences to help them build their background knowledge. I want to show them what their potential is and that it extends far beyond the area they come from.
My Project
We are starting a program that will encourage our fifth graders by having them practice their oral reading fluency, while simultaneously exposing our Prekinder kids to a variety of texts. In order to make this program successful, we need engaging children's books, as well as a primary journal per student. Books, such as Secret Pizza Party, Mango, Abuela and Me, and Dragons Love Tacos will pique the interest of all ages.
Literacy is one of the biggest problems we face in all grade levels.
Students will read to our youngest learners, increasing literacy in both PreKinder and 5th grade. All the books will be used daily and will be rotated through all the students. The fifth graders will then help the Prekinder students write a summary of the book in the journals requested.
Our goal is to increase literacy in both these grade levels. This would significantly impact students as they move throughout their school years.
