Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We may be biased, but we believe we have the best kids around! Our school serves about 400 kindergarten through 5th grade students who we believe have the capacity to change our world!

There's a quote that says, 'Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.' We are trying to build a community of leaders, and it starts here!

This summer, our team worked to build take-home libraries in our primary classrooms. Through donations, grants, and partnerships, we have built libraries filled with high-interest fiction and non-fiction texts that students will take home on a daily basis to read with their family members. Students and families would record their reading in reading journals as they work towards their individual and class reading goals.

In May, a first grade class piloted our take-home library plan using a gallon-sized Ziploc bag for the books and the journal. We learned pretty quickly that as tough as Ziploc bags are, they are no match for taking books in and out of the bag multiple times at home and at school, and the wear of being transported in a child's backpack to and from school every day.

Our proposal includes funding to purchase a sturdy, colorful, nylon book bag with a name pocket, handle, and Velcro seal. We know that these bags will hold up to the test of our youngest and most excited readers!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read our proposal and for your support of students and their education. As Nelson Mandela said, "Education is the most powerful weapon we have to change the world." Let's do this!
