Knowing and understanding how ones body works is the key to a healthy and happy life. Dance class teaches healthy habits of body and mind. Help my students know and understand their own bodies in and out of dance class.
Most of my students have little experience with the world outside of their project, building, and block.
They have seen and experienced more than they are even mentally ready to handle. For some, getting to school, let alone graduating is a great achievement. In my New York based high school, finding the right in-road is necessary for a student's success. The arts provide that in-road for most of these students. They get excited about dance. They enter the dance program unsure of who they are and what they want to become. They end up getting excited about dance and therefore getting excited about coming to school and being successful. They take ownership of their choices and consequences and blossom as young adults.
My Project
By funding this project, my students will be able to see and feel a life-size skeleton. They will gain an understanding of the human body by the use of visual and tactile experiences. "Fred the Flexible Skeleton" has full range of motion and flexion in torso and legs therefore making our dance class actions visible to students in real time. Understanding how the body moves within each style of dance is not only important to understanding the art form but also understanding how ones body is completing those actions. Students' understanding of dance as well as anatomy will be greatly enhanced with this class skeleton.

It will set the expectation of a strong body awareness and understanding and teach students about their own physical vessel. This skeleton will help bring anatomy to life within this high school dance curriculum. Obesity is an epidemic in the United States and any help or tools we can teach our students about the body's function will enable them to make smarter choices in the future.
