Most of my students have little experience with the world outside of their project, building, and block. They have seen and experienced more than they are even mentally ready to handle. For some, getting to school, let alone graduating is a great achievement. In my New York based high school, finding the right in-road is necessary for a student's success. The arts provide that in-road for most of these students. They get excited about dance. They enter the dance program unsure of who they are and what they want to become. They end up getting excited about dance and therefore getting excited about coming to school and being successful. They take ownership of their choices and consequences and blossom as young adults.
