BOLTing thru the Maze

Help me give my students Sphero Bolts in order to enhance their understanding of linear and rotational motion in preparation of schoolwide competition.

My Students

I have been blessed with the opportunity to be part of the lives of some of the most talented young people in Oakland. I work with a diverse cast of young scholars with backgrounds from all over the world. Newcomers from many areas leave our demographics at 39% Asian, 38% African American, and 21% Hispanic, and make cultural competency, and community values strengths at my school.

My students are creative, interested in the world around them, and intensely curious about their futures.

I have noticed in them that they have an organic respect and appreciation of adults who they interact with. I have also noticed that the unique barriers to education that each student negotiates is part of what makes these scholars and their success so special.

My Project

Our school will be doing a Sphero maze race with the entire academy, Innovative Design and Engineering Academy (IDEA), students from 10th to 12th grade. In preparation of this culminating event, the juniors whom I teach will be doing their own maze race and force investigation for the third marking period of school when they take principles of engineering with me. For this project we will be using Sphero Bolts which are programmable robot balls that you can drive and code via a computer. These Sphero BOLTS enable my students to investigate linear and rotational motion, concepts that need to be on lock for them navigate to navigate through the maze.

The Sphero BOLTS that will be purchased for this project are integral to the maze race because it will allow students to do fortify their coding skills while also learning and internalizing physics concepts that will be crucial for the race.

The project will begin with frontloading students with information about what rotational and linear motion are and also the variety of motions they Sphero BOLTS are capable of doing working within the scope of the Afterwards, we will begin learning the basics of javascript, the language needed to code and control the sphero BOLTs. Concurrently, students will get familiar with the internal mechanisms of Sphero BOLTS and start to build simplified replica's of Sphero BOLTS as lead into our machine building unit the follow marking period. This leads up to the final two weeks of the marking period where each student will eventually create scripts to code their Sphero BOLTS to race in their maze in preparation of the larger maze raze with the whole academy.
