Help me give my students access to Sphero BOLT Robots and high-quality books about coding.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I currently serve as a Future Ready Librarian at a bilingual Title I school. We have 825+ students, ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade, with over 95% coming from low-income backgrounds. One of my professional goals is to develop our library resources so that my students have access to Robots and high-quality books about coding which promote diversity, inclusion, and acceptance.

My students are curious, eager learners who need exposure to Robotics and a variety of stories that demonstrate real-world examples of coding to help grow their future ready skill sets.

Since the majority of my students are English Language Learners, they especially need access to books in a variety of reading levels that will encourage their love of reading and increase their literacy rates.

My Project

This project will give my students access to robotics and high-interest STEAM books about Coding that act as mirrors, windows, and doors. It will help build our library set of BOLT robots.

Books that act as mirrors allow students to see themselves reflected in characters from similar backgrounds using coding and robotics in real-world examples.

Teachers will be able to create engaging, curriculum-based STEAM lessons utilizing these high-interest books and Sphero BOLT Robots. The STEAM books selected represent a variety of interests so that teachers can scaffold their lessons to best meet the needs of their learners.

Teaching coding helps students learn the concept of cause and effect and also supports reading and literacy skills because it helps readers identify cause and effect relationships in literature.

Students will be able to read books about coding in the classroom or at home, encouraging their love of reading. Students will be able to use the Sphero BOLT Robots and learn coding skills during their Library time.
