Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our school serves Pre K-8th grade students in an inner-city. Classroom sizes range from 20-27 students in a classroom.

The students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds with a wide range of background knowledge.

We are an International Baccalaureate School. ​Our curriculum is designed to engage students in rigorous, inquiry-based, concept-based instruction and learning that encompasses global perspectives. Experiences offered through our balanced and comprehensive curriculum foster 21st-century skills and prepare students to appreciate cultural diversity, be active, internationally-minded citizens and become lifelong learners who are able to adjust to changes in life and to become successful in the global society.

My Project

As an SEL committee, we have implemented an SEL afternoon for our students. The entire PreK-8 school will have 1-2 days a month where they will work with their classroom teachers and classmates to engage in SEL activities. Many students have lost the skill of compromise, taking turns, winning and losing respectfully, communication and just enjoying each other's company. These games will be distributed to the classrooms so that teachers can set up stations for the students during our SEL sessions.

Some of the best memories are spent around a board game and these games will help students develop stronger SEL skills.

The goal is for students to play and work together as they begin to develop stronger friendships with each other. We also want to develop stronger student and teacher relationships after a year of remote learning. In turn, we hope these activities will help us improve academic growth as students begin to improve upon their SEL skills.
