My Students
My students come from a diverse background, representing more than 20 different cultures and speaking 25 unique languages. They also come from various socio-economic backgrounds, some having only just arrived in the country with very few possessions.
Every day many of my students face challenges that students at more affluent schools couldn't dream of facing: homelessness, parents who abuse drugs, friend or family member killed in a gang-related incident, etc.
Yet every day our students come to school intent on doing work and hoping for a future that will take them to better places.
My Project
So few YA books have been written that feature African American teens, but as the Black Lives Matter movement gains momentum, the doors are opening for more and more books to be written for, by, and about this disenfranchised group.
I want to ensure that students of color at my school have access to books that reflect the world they are living in today.
Putting these books in the hands of our students will not only allow them to relate to and empathize with characters like themselves, but it will also empower them to know they can aspire to do more and be more than they ever thought possible.
