Our students come from a diverse background with various socio-economic needs. Everyday, many of them face challenges that students at more affluent schools couldn't dream of facing: homelessness, parents who abuse drugs, friend or family member killed in a gang-related incident, etc. Yet everyday, our students come to school intent on doing work, and hoping for a future that will take them to better places. One obstacle that gets in the way is poor reading ability. Many of our students read at 2-4 levels below grade level. The best way to improve these reading scores is, of course, to have students read more and more. We teachers work diligently to pair students up with the "just right" book that not only works for their level of comprehension, but also interests them.
