Ms. Dunbar from New Orleans LA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 30 copies of The Autobiography of Malcolm X to learn more about the civil rights movement and gain inspiration for a better tomorrow.

"Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today," Malcolm X said. Reading and learning about civil rights activists will enhance my literature class and inspire students to accomplish their goals--no matter how hard these dreams may seem.
This group of students was directly impacted by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
They had to relocate and adapt to new schools, home lives, and communities all while suffering the heartache of seeing the place they called home destroyed by a natural disaster. Despite these challenges, these students have set their minds to better themselves and advance their educations by enrolling on this tour. The charm and beauty of New Orleans are reflected in each of the students. They are vibrant, charismatic youth who have the capacity to be influential leaders of tomorrow. Yet many of their dreams are cut short by the limitedness of their environment. Like most students in our city, they come from working class families and 84% of students in our school receive free lunches.
"Without education, you're not going anywhere in this world." It is important for students to learn about civil rights leaders such as Malcolm X so that they have an understanding and appreciation of the sacrifices made to achieve equality. I need a class set of The Autobiography of Malcolm X so that all of my students have the opportunity to read this powerful story.
"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body" said Richard Steele.
Reading is a great learning experience in and of itself, and reading about such a motivational figure deeply enhances the experience.
