Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We have very enthusiastic students in our wonderful school. Our school is nestled in the San Bernardino National Forest. We have a focus on hands-on learning, where students learn best by doing and experimenting. We have an ESTEM (Environmental, science, technology, engineering, mathematics) program that encourages students to test theories, explore a variety of options and determine success by improving design. Students at all grade levels are encouraged to learn with hands-on experience. My belief is that learning all subject areas is nurtured with real life practices.
My Project
Learning through observation and real world experience is crucial for effective learning. Living in the mountains of Southern California gives us an advantage in our school environment to make observations of live birds that live in this forest area. We have many opportunities to observe nature through our classroom window. However, not all learning happens in the classroom.
Wile learning about some of the birds in our area we had some questions.
The books that are being requested hold more information of the birds in California. My students will be able to reference the books when they are unsure of a birds species when using the binoculars.
The Western Bluebird is making a comeback in our area. With the help of the window nesting boxes, students will be able to learn about the life cycle of the birds by seeing it from the egg. Not only will the nesting boxes allow my students the pleasure of seeing the bird start their lives, students will ensure that the birds have a safe environment to live and grow. The window feeders can give the students a close-up view of what the bird do when they are eating and which foods they like better.
Students will have the responsibilities of making sure that the bird feeders and water feeders are filled in our school's gardens. We will treat the birds as our class pets, even if they are wild.
