I am a second grade teacher at an elementary school located in downtown Raleigh, NC. My school offers electives to students grades K-5. The mission of the school is to provide learning opportunities and experiences to inner-city children that they wouldn't ordinarily be exposed to in school. By doing so, we hope that these children will be motivated and excited about learning and also feel successful about school.
As one of our Second Grade projects our classes participate in a Wax Museum. All the Second Graders read a biography and write a report about a historical figure. Then they dress up as their figure and the Kindergarten and First Grade classes come and watch our children pretend to be wax figures and pay tokens to watch the wax figures come alive.
Unfortunately, our school library is not well stocked with biographies especially for our struggling readers. Also, many of the children who struggle are the ones who don't get the opportunity to get to their public library. I am looking to acquire copies of biographies at an easy reading level so the struggling readers feel successful when preparing for this wonderful learning experience.
