BioFashion Lab: Sustainable Textiles

Help me give my students hands-on experience creating sustainable fabrics using mycelium kits, bacterial cellulose (SCOBY) cultures, algae cultures, corn starch, glycerin, plant-based dyes, and tray molds.

Ms. Reed Green Street Academy 377
Baltimore, MD Grades 9-12

My Project

Imagine a classroom transformed into a BioFashion Lab, where Environmental Science students grow fabrics from living materials and engineer wearable prototypes from mycelium, algae, and plant-based bioplastics. In this hands-on, interdisciplinary project, students merge biology, chemistry, and environmental science to engineer sustainable materials that could replace conventional textiles.

Through experiential learning and inquiry-based exploration, students will take on the roles of environmental engineers, biotechnologists, materials scientists, and sustainability analysts as they research, prototype, and test their own “living fabrics.” Using mycelium kits, bacterial cellulose cultures, algae powders, gelatin, cornstarch, and glycerin, students will create eco-friendly materials shaped with molds and analyzed for tensile strength, biodegradability, and colorfastness.

They’ll collect and interpret data, refine their designs, and connect their work to real-world STEM practices such as lab research, quality control, and bioengineering. This process encourages creative problem-solving, critical thinking, and real-world application of scientific practices.

Throughout the project, students will study diverse scientists and innovators shaping the field of sustainable materials. The experience culminates in a BioFashion Booth at our school’s STEAM Night, where student teams present their prototypes and engage the community in sustainable design. This outreach fosters inclusivity, science communication, and civic responsibility, empowering students to see themselves as future changemakers.

By funding this project, you’ll give students the opportunity to innovate, explore STEM careers, and make a visible environmental impact. They will leave not only with technical and scientific skills, but with a deeper understanding of sustainability, diversity, and real-world creative problem-solving in science and engineering.
