This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come into our school every day full of excitement and eagerness to learn each with their own unique abilities. We are considered a Title I low-income school, where every child receives free breakfast and lunch. Our school community is very diverse and full of amazing learning opportunities for our students. 91 percent of our students are high needs, 63 percent being economically disadvantaged.

Every student in my classroom is learning English as their second language.

Over 80 percent of our students do not speak English as their first language. Although the majority of our student's first language is Spanish, we also have a large population of students who speak Arabic, Twi, Portuguese, and Albanian. We are the only school in Worcester who has a bilingual education program, where students receive instruction in Spanish while receiving support in English.

My Project

All of my students are at the beginning stages of their English language development. Research states that it takes being exposed to one vocabulary word at least seven times in order to truly know the word. These headphones will provide more opportunities for students to listen to the English language and learn more vocabulary words in English.

This project will provide multiple opportunities for my students to listen and speak the English language.

They will also allow for the students to practice speaking in a less- anxiety provoking manner. For many new-comers, speaking in their second language in front of a class of students is very scary. The microphones on these headphones will allow the students to record themselves practicing their English.
