Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are intelligent, thoughtful and bilingual! Many of them have been in our schools dual immersion program since kindergarten. Two years ago, I was their 2nd grade teacher and this upcoming school year I am fortunate enough to be their 4th grade teacher. In 2nd grade, they enjoyed Flashlight Fridays, where they got to lay on the floor, under desks, and on bean bags or beach chairs I had setup throughout the classroom during reading independent reading time.
Unfortunately, despite their love of reading, most of them prefered reading books in English and were very reluctant to read in Spanish because they did not have access to high-interests books in their reading level.
In 2010, our school became home to our districts' Dual-Immersion program. Since then, our enrollment has skyrocket, but unfortunately our access to Spanish books has not been kept up to meet the eager desire of our students to read. With your support, these amazing students will be provided with a wide-range of Spanish books to support them as we launch Readers Workshop this
My Project
My classroom library is a place where my students enjoy independently reading books, listening to intereactive read-alouds and write about their reading in their readers notebooks. Each of my students knows the value of the books placed in our library, they borrow them to read outside during recess and lunch and many will ask to take the books home because they do not always have access to high interests books at home. All of the books in this project have been chosen with my students interests in mind and with your support, they will begin the school year with the Harry Potter series, National Geographic Readers, the entire Magic Tree House series and many more books-- all of which will be in Spanish.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own reading level during Readers Workshop.
They will also be able to choose books that interest them; books that that will build up their reading fluency and vocabulary in Spanish, helping my eager readers become bilingual leaders.
