Big Thinking With Low-Tech

Help me give my students a low-tech tool for thinking through math applications in groups or individually. These giant magnetic dry-erase sheets will give the students enough space to work on higher-level math problems.

My Project

Our school classrooms have old chalkboards that were painted with whiteboard paint a few years ago. The paint is coming off and they do not erase well. The 8x12 mini whiteboards are over 10 years old and stained. I have tried laminating large pieces of paper, but after a couple of months, those also are stained making them difficult to read.

At the beginning of each lesson, students work together on a problem designed to help them remember previous learning that will be needed for the lesson that day.

The goal is to have students display their work on the board when it is completed and then explain it. I also use this during group activities. Funding and supplies are limited, which makes the large post-it pads no longer an option.

The students are enjoying the group work. They learn and enjoy showing off their answers as well as explaining the work to others. I tried to get whiteboard desks, but they were too expensive. Please help me provide this simple low-tech tool for my students to continue to learn and grow.
