Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a genuinely diverse community. Not only do students come from varying ethnic backgrounds, but the life experiences that they’ve had are incredibly unique. These young 5th graders, my class, brings that diversity to the school throughout thoughts and conversations every day. They are attending a Spanish Immersion program in North Portland. Close to half of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. The technology kids access at school is the only technology some of our students access.
One way to encourage student engagement is by using electronic devices.
We use Chromebooks and these devices are used in a variety of ways. During Spanish, kids take their weekly vocabulary and comprehension tests online. In this moment, for example, my students need to have their own Chromebook during class to access our online Social Studies curriculum and write original plays in our Play Writing class. But we would like to continue working with technology every day. Technology provides numerous tools that teachers and students can use in and out of the classroom to enhance student learning. There are also numerous on-line resources about using technology to enhance learning in a number of different ways.
My Project
With the addition of 5 new Chromebooks we will be able to have an entire center group where each student has their own computer! It allows me to easily provide each student with time on the computer every day! My students will be able to practice literacy and math skills on web based programs, create projects, post on our class blog, and so much more. Thanks to the mobility of the devices, students can use them at their tables, at the rug, and we can bring them outside. I can place a computer at each table, allowing them to work in small groups, or we could even share them with another class. The possibilities are endless.
These computers provide me with the needed resources to help my students discover and explore.
At this moment, for example, the best resource we currently have to supplement our Language Arts adoption is Newsela, a kids' new website with customizable reading levels, quizzes and writing prompts. Since I have Chromebooks in my classroom, we can access this resource online, saving time and resources involved in printing the articles. The more Chromebooks we have in class, the fewer kids will need to share.
It is always challenging to find quality curricula in Spanish Immersion. The current Spanish "textbook" for our Social Studies adoption has no illustrations, photos, maps or diagrams. Fortunately, we have access to the digital version as well that has most of the aforementioned resources. We live in a digital world, and we, as teachers, need to provide resources, opportunities, and guidance to our students.
