Beyond the Books: A Place to Create, Think and Recharge

Help me give my students engaging, screen-free activities that encourage creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and relaxation in our media center.

My Project

Our school is a Title I middle school serving a community where many families face economic challenges. Our media center has been closed for almost two years, and we are excited to reopen its doors and create a space our students can truly call their own. As the new media coordinator, I have the opportunity to breathe new life into this space and rebuild a strong library culture.

My students are creative, curious, and energetic, and they connect with learning in different ways.

While some naturally gravitate toward books, others may need a different reason to walk through the doors and discover what their library has to offer. I want every student to feel that there is a place for them in the media center.

With this project, I hope to create a quiet activity area where students can unplug, create, think, and recharge. Puzzles, brain teasers, logic games, coloring materials, and art supplies will provide meaningful screen free activities that encourage problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, patience, and collaboration.

For many of our students, school provides access to resources and experiences they may not otherwise have. A student may initially visit the media center for a puzzle, coloring activity, or brain teaser, but that visit can lead to discovering a book, trying something new, connecting with others, or simply realizing that the library is a place where they belong.

As we reopen and rebuild our media center, I want my students to know this space is for them. It is a place to read, learn, create, think, connect, and belong.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
