Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"People often say that I'm curious about too many things at once... But can you really forbid a man from harbouring a desire to know and embrace everything that surrounds him?"
-Alexander von Humboldt
My students are hungry to learn and discover. They desperately need to know that they are capable of great discoveries and that science is not a set of facts--but humanity's journey to understand the universe. I want to take them to the summit of Chimborazo, rafting down the Amazon River, and to the heart of the scientific revolution in Paris.
They want more from me as their teacher, and I intend to give them everything I've got.
My Project
"The Invention of Nature: Alexander von Humboldt's New World" is a National Bestseller and an incredible account of Humboldt's journey through the Americas. It is a breathtaking story about human discovery and the birth of environmentalism.
Too often the importance of the history of science is overlooked.
Humanizing science and putting it in context allows students to understand how discoveries are made, what the world was like before those discoveries, and understand how our culture influences science.
We will use these books to help show Biology students what it means to be a scientist--and that they are capable of great discovery too.
