My Students

I teach music through a grant program that integrates core subjects into the arts. On any given day, I see grades K-6 walk through my classroom, where we explore the world, language, math, and sciences through music.

My school is located in a suburb of SaIt Lake City.

The students and teachers have settled and created a thriving school community. I teach the whole school of over 1,100 students every week. They are very eager to learn and enjoy the integrated music lessons. They know that in my class, even if they don't particularly care for music, they will learn something new from a subject they enjoy; whether it is language arts, social studies, math, or science. Every day they give me fun stories to take home and share, and I look forward to going to work every day because of them.

My Project

During these unprecedented times, teachers have been pushed to find creative options to continue normal learning. In the music class, that means being as close to one instrument per kid as possible.

These instruments I have requested are essential in helping me achieve this goal of one instrument for each student.

The triangles will form a half class set that I can pair with other instrument groups. The chimes and vibra-slaps will join my other shakers in doing the same. They will be used in k-6 when we play, practice, and demonstrate rhythm patterns and perform percussion play alongs. They will add different timbres and interest to the things we do in class.

The bass recorders will be used with 4th grade. I currently have a consort of instruments minus the basses. The lower recorder voices add depth to the recorder sound. They also allow for differential learning, as their parts are simpler and achievable by all students with guaranteed success. They help elevate the exercise in learning recorders from mundane to a full and interesting experience.
