Becoming Lifelong Readers with Author Study Book Clubs
My students need multiple copies of books by beloved authors such as Jerry Spinelli, Suzanne Collins, and Roald Dahl to engage in book club studies of these authors and their craft.
My students come from a wide range of backgrounds, but in our classroom, everyone is equal. The rate of poverty in my district is the highest in the area; the majority of students in our schools receive free or reduced-price lunch.
Our city in southern Maine is a former mill town, where many businesses and jobs have come and gone.
Despite the economic struggles often felt by parents here, students come to school positive and excited about the future that school can bring to them.
My Project
Avid readers often have favorite authors or favorite books; they have books on reserve at the library, or have a mental list of the next book they want to read. For some students, this love of reading comes quite naturally. For others students, who may not think of themselves as "readers," the trouble is often that they have never found an author with whom they connect, or never have others to discuss such powerful connections alongside.
With this project, children will discover books and authors that speak to them -- they will become experts on the author and will come to find the joy of being able to say they have a favorite author.
Because this will be done in book clubs, students will embark upon this study of an author along with classmates who will share in the rich experience of learning life lessons through literature.
