Research shows that the best way to push students progress in literacy is for students to have their eyes in books for a minimum of 90 minutes daily. That's a lot of reading! I've learned that students benefit from having a wide variety of titles to choose from at their reading level. Even though these are fifth graders, their reading levels span from the third grade range through eighth grade. For students to read the amount required for improvement, they need access to books that are both interesting and accessible. The school library is a valuable resource, but students are limited by time constraints and can't always get to the library when they need to. Our classroom library needs to be a place where they can find books they will love.
