Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

No matter what language, reading is important because it helps to expand a student's knowledge and understanding of the world. When students are given opportunities to read, they translate the descriptions of people, places, and things and log them into their brains as mental images. Books can transport students into new worlds and introduce them to amazing people who live exciting lives.

Reading to my students will give them the opportunity to read and be read to in their native language, while at the same time learning vocabulary and sentence structure in the second language.

The books I am looking to get funded will provide just that. "Bridge to Terabithia" is a classic that will never go out of style. A beautiful story of friendship, imagination, and loss that my fifth graders can't leave elementary school without having read this novel. The second book, "Esperanza Rising" is another great novel with a multicultural lens and is beautifully told with many great opportunities to explore sensory details and other aspects of the writer's craft in my student's native language. Soñadores and Loteria are other books I want to add to my classroom library and create interactive lessons around these books and include them at the start of the school year. With these new additions to my classroom, I am hoping my reluctant readers will take to the stories and characters depicted in each book and encourage them to read more as they move on to middle school.
