Help me give my students wobble cushions and a Little Folks Visuals set.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a Special Education teacher in a 6:1:1 self-contained room. I teach in a high needs, Title I school. Many of my students come from unsteady home lives and many of them rely on school for stability. This creates a lack of funding within the school. Unfortunately, due to low funding, we lack technology in the classroom. I have a smartboard that does not work and no other technology available. Without technology, it takes creativity and many other resources to create multi-sensory lessons that will engage my students. Since this is a self-contained room, my students have varying disabilities and special needs. Daily living skills that we find easy are difficult for my students. This includes communicating wants and needs and regulating their emotions. Many of my students are nonverbal and rely on technology and materials to be their voice. Despite their struggles, I have confidence that with the right tools they can learn just like any other student. I hope to inspire my students and I hope my students can inspire you.
This project will allow for flexible seating, hands-on learning and a better flowing classroom environment! Since technology is limited, this will allow students to maintain focus and stay engaged during lessons and working with peers.
Currently, in my classroom we have desks, this does not allow my students ample opportunities to move about.
Without the opportunity to move we often see increases in behaviors and frustration. We all know that a frustrated student will not learn and not enjoy school. The cushion seats will be used in replacement of a standard chair. Allowing my students to get sensory input while completing their work. This will decrease their frustration and increase
motivation.
The felt board will provide hands-on and interactive lessons to help my special needs students to explore stories. Visualizing a story through the felt board will increase their comprehension and focus. This will also help them learn to sequence events.
