My 3K and Pre-K students, some as young as two years old and still in diapers, were SO excited to see the wooden puzzles, Duplo blocks, magnetic trays and letters, and cannot wait until I begin reading stories that we can act out with our new hand puppets!\r\n\r\nA fifty minute period is a very long time for our youngest students, all of whom still require a daily nap-time. Going from one activity to another in 5-15 minute chunks helps keep the period from being monotonous and keeps the engagement up! The wooden puzzles are great because I am able to differentiate with students who need simpler puzzles with fewer pieces and students who need more of a challenge and are learning some of their letters and numbers. My students are learning to share, take turns, and use words to ask nicely if they want something from someone. They are also learning it's okay to say \"no\" and \"I'm not ready yet.\" which is great for self-advocating. The Duplo blocks have one car and two figures in each kit, which means a table of three or four students have to figure out how to collaborate when building and telling stories. \r\n\r\nIt's been so fun to observe their vocabulary and speech blossom when connecting to read-alouds, working at table groups, and explaining what they are building. I truly do not know what I would do without these materials! The blanket and teddybear are great for my students who may need some additional comfort, these were game changers at the beginning of the year when many of our students were having some separation anxiety.\r\n\r\nThe flow of a library lesson for my littlest ones goes like this: \r\nWe enter the library, I greet them at the door, we find our spots on the alphabet rug, sitting criss-cross.\r\nI show them a visual agenda of the lesson so they know what to expect. \r\nWe do a library chant (call and response) and go over our three important rules of being safe, respectful and kind.\r\nI introduce a book for a read-aloud and we make observations of the cover and identify any letters we might recognize.\r\nI read the book, making sure to give my students opportunities to make sound effects or act parts out, we make connections along the way.\r\nI introduce the activity and usually connect our work to the theme of the book (ie: we read a book on kindness, we practice being kind while doing small group hands-on activities.)\r\nI use visuals on the Smart board and a timer to help keep us focused and engaged.\r\nWe share how things went.\r\nWe clean up.\r\nWe do some rainbow breaths (stretching our arms from our sides up above us and making a \"rainbow\" down to the floor while breathing in (up) and out (down).\r\nWe transition to our turtle tank to visit with Michelangelo.\r\nNow it's time to line up for their classroom teacher, we wave a \"see you later!\" to Michelangelo and to each other.\r\n\r\nI know this is a lot of information, but I think giving some context and description can perhaps be useful. These lessons are beautiful, community-building times and they go so smoothly because of the activities and their connections to our books.\r\n\r\nThank you SO SO SO very much, once again!","fullyFundedDate":1754447229682,"projectUrl":"project/building-words-and-creating-our-stories/9531090/","projectTitle":"Building Words and Creating Our Stories","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Taína Montalvo-Teller","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8369291_orig.png?crop=1072,1072,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754318487387","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8369291"},{"teacherId":6774437,"projectId":9214045,"letterContent":"We are so grateful to our generous donors for making it possible to provide our graduating students with memorable swag bags to celebrate their big day.
