I teach sixth graders in a Chicago Public School on the Southwest side of the city. This year is off to a different type of start, but I am super excited to continue to keep my students engaged and thriving from home as well as those returning to our hybrid classroom. Because of the tools that I got from DonorsChoose.org, students demonstrated tremendous success last year despite the pandemic, and I have no doubts the same will be true this year.
The changing expectations for this school year mean that I need a few resources to make hybrid learning work for everyone.
Your support of a few special tools will be a tremendous help in making a smooth transition to hybrid learning.
These materials are so important to recreate an important aspect of normal school for my students. Each year, I have students participate in a book club that is part of our district's Battle of the Books program. This year, it is a bit more challenging. Materials cannot be shared as easily, I don't have regular contact with students besides Google Meets meetings, and our time together is focused on the academic classes and not some of the other important aspects of school like clubs and enrichment activities. This is my effort to add some normal back to my students schooling.
These books are needed to support a book club that would meet after the regular school day on Google Meets.
For students that would like to participate, I will drop off books at their house so that they can read and prepare for the district's competition. I am hoping because of the hurdles that have been put in place by circumstances in the world, that my students have the materials they need to not only participate but actually win when we compete in the final competition. Nothing can happen unless we get the books to read in order to participate.
