Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my class attend a Title I school with a large population. My students come from a low-income and mostly Hispanic area. Many of the school community families have recently migrated from countries such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and many others. Most of these students do not have access to many things that other students have such as technology or parents who master the English language. Consequently, many of these students do not have the help at home that they need. Many of them are struggling academically. Most of the students in my class receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many students also come from single-parent families. Regardless of the challenges before them, most of these students have a hunger to learn!
This fall our school community was struck by the effects of several hurricanes as well as other storms and most of our school families were impacted in one way or another.
Some experienced structural damage to their homes causing them to relocate and others flooding, some damage and loss of power, but regardless of the damage, families were affected in many different ways. Many of the students lack English proficiency and are acquiring the English language.
My Project
It is my goal to provide my students with the basic materials needed in order to accomplish daily assignments successfully. Having an updated printer with ink to replace our malfunctioning existing one as well as supplies such as pencils, pens and the staplers would make a world of difference. The students would be able to print projects and make presentations related to our units of study. Many students come to class unprepared for daily tasks. They are responsible, determined and willing to engage, but many lack the basic supplies such as pencils and pens. I usually have a stash of these available for them to borrow but our supplies are running low. Additionally, the hanging folders and labels would be used for organizing their folders and paperwork.
Together the requested supplies will make a huge difference in our classroom, they'll provide an organized working environment that is conducive to learning.
These coupled with the erasable answer boards, used for fun, competitive answer display (we usually use self created paper signs) and designed to get kids actively involved in classroom activities, would motivate our students to accomplish their academic goals in a fun, interactive, dynamic way.
